A Smoky Mountain Baptizin'
Signed and numbered limited edition prints are available of this original oil painting by Jan Roblin. In the background is the old community of White Oak Flats, the original name of Gatlinburg. The subjects in this composite painting include over fifty men, women and children who once lived in the mountains of East Tennessee, and span several generations. They may not all have lived at the same time, nor attended the same church. Photographs used to create this painting came from family members or from the archives at the headquarters of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
The objective was to capture the romantic beauty of the land as it once was, while showing the strength and character of the proud mountain people as they participate in a devout religious ceremony. Baptisms still occur today in area churches, but not so often in the icy streams that flow through the Great Smoky Mountains.
