(Bishop of Myra) Original St. Nicholas |
|
This is the original St. Nicholas who lived in Turkey about 400 A.D. He later became the patron saint of children, sailors and pawnbrokers. He was chosen to be the patron saint of Russia until the 1917 revolution did away with religious symbols. His post-revolution name became "Dyed Noroz" (Grandfather Frost) and the red vestments (which represented the blood of Christ) were changed to blue. He is often accompanied by the Kriskindle (Christ Child).
