W. C. Handy "Father of the Blues" |
|
"W. C. Handy was born and raised in Florence, Alabama, and so was I. When he was grown he moved to Memphis and lived the "blues" long before he started writing them. Handy had already made a major impression in the world of jazz long before I was born. But the first time I visited his birthplace on College Street, he also became a strong influence in my own life. His accomplishments encouraged me to pursue my own dreams... so I promised myself that when I became a portrait artist, I would paint this great man. And I did." Jan

| A biographical portrait
tells a story about a person. This story begins in the lower left hand corner of the canvas. It is the log cabin in Florence, Alabama, where W. C. Handy was born on a cold November morning. Center: The smoke from the chimney encircles a portrait of this world famous musician after he reached full maturity. As he meets the viewer's eye, he seems very pleased with the choices he made that set his spirit free and allowed him to reach his full potential. Left middle: Three of Handy's most famous compositions, "Beale Street Blues", "St. Louis Blues", and "Memphis Blues." Upper left corner: The piano that Handy used to compose these three pieces. Upper right corner: Handy, dressed in white, perhaps on the other side of life... still playing his horn. |
